To confirm that your child indeed has constipation, the following has to be noted:
1. If she has not had a bowel movement in about two to four days
2. She is uncomfortable and seems to have a hard time passing the stools
3. She passes dry, hard stools after so many struggles.
4. Liquid stools in the diaper or underwear. Constipation is not only restricted to hard stools. In fact the reason this can occur is because the hard stools have blocked that anal entrance. So, the liquid because of its little bulk, slips through the little space available.
One big mistake many parents and wards make when they notice this, is that they start to treat for diarrhea when they should be treating for constipation.
Constipation is popular among toddlers who consume lots of milk, and dairy products while leaving out fruits and high fibre foods. Sometimes toddlers also react to parents' pressure on them to have a bowel movement by intentionally holding it in. You will notice this when she arcs her back, stiffens her body, and gets red in the face and yet produces nothing.
Sometimes too, your child may not be taking time to completely empty her bowels which results in a build up of fecal matters hence causing the colon to become stressed and cause cramping. This is however dangerous as an enlarged colon otherwise known as megacolon can cause a lager-than-normal waste making it hard for the child to stool.
